Fifth Grade “Overcoming Obstacles” DI Project
Differentiating Instruction
TARGET/GOAL: Multi-area differentiated instruction project focusing on character education "overcoming obstacles." STRATEGIES: Students will experience what it is like to overcome obstacles in band, art, chorus and library. Students will be able to select projects and subject material. EVIDENCE OF COMPLETION: Final research project in library, completion of art project, chorus and band at concert in June. COMPLETION DATE: June 2008 Spring Concert
The goal of this project is to provide students with examples of how human beings have, and continue to, overcome great odds to do amazing things. This is a cross-curricular project involving Library-Media research, music and art. Students will be able to observe several examples of real people who have overcome great obstacles as well as participate in several hands on, real life activities that will provide an opportunity to experience what life might be like for these kinds of people. Differentiated Instruction aims to provide students with different learning preferences, strengths and weaknesses to have the opportunity to learn in a way that they learn best and to provide several different ways to experience and participate in learning. Usually this is accomplished by a classroom teacher providing several options for students to choose how they’d like to demonstrate their learning. In this case, we are providing differentiated instruction across the special areas of library/media, chorus, band and art.
4/7/08 First, ever Cleveland Hill Elementary teleconference! Students had an opportunity to speak to Mr. Nelson live in the small aud!Our teleconference was extremely successful. Students heard Mr. Nelson speak about his life and how he has overcome Arthrogryposis, which has locked all of his joints from the neck down, to lead a successful life as an Assistant Football Coach for Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma, Washington. John "Nellie" Nelson has been involved in the program since 1989 when, as a PLU student, he attended a post game "Afterglow." Nelson was born in Singapore and also suffers spinal cord problems and has depended on a wheelchair for mobility all of his life. His involvement in the program helped him see a purpose for his life, and he has served as an inspiration for countless PLU football players in the intervening years. In the past several years, he has taken an active role in some of the program's administrative duties. See Art Information at: Art See Art Websites at: VSA ARTS Artists With Disabilities
